ATELIER / MUSEUM er en separatudstilling og en totalinstallation af billedkunstner Thorgej Steen Hansen, der fordeler sig over tre ensuite rum i Banja Rathnov Galleri og Kunsthandel og kommer til at rumme en salon-inspireret ophængning af fotografier: I det ene rum vises mere end 30 fotografier i forskellige formater taget i kunstnerens eget atelier den 26. januar 2023 i København; og i det andet, installeres en ophængning af mere end 20 fotografier, taget på Athens nationale arkæologiske museum i løbet af en uge i marts måned i år.
Tilsammen slår de fotografiske ophængninger udstillingen tematisk an. Idet de to verdener, som de to ophængninger hver især repræsenterer – kunstnerens subjektive og rodede privatsfære i atelieret og antikkens civilisationsopbyggende kulturvugge, som den er ordnet på museet i Athen – mødes i det midterste rum. Hvor de blander sig i en totalinstallatorisk opsætning bestående af nye værker udført af kunstneren, samt værker fra kunstneres egen samling af både egne og andres værker, sat i scene med udvalgte genstande (bøger, lp-plader, souvenirs, antikke mønter, et skrivebord og sten fundet på stranden med mere) hentet op af atelierets gemmer for at få nyt liv og indgå i nye sammenhænge i galleriet.
ATELIER / MUSEUM is at the same time a solo exhibition and a total installation by visual artist Thorgej Steen Hansen, spread over three ensuite rooms in Banja Rathnov Gallri & Kunshandel. Where each of the two outermost rooms will accommodate a salon-inspired hanging of photographs: In one, more than 30 photographs in different formats taken in the artist’s own studio on January 26, 2023 in Copenhagen will be displayed; and in the other, a hanging of more than 20 photographs taken at the National Archaeological Museum of Athens during a week in March this year will be installed.
Together, the photographic hangings set the theme of the exhibition. As the two worlds that the two hangings each represent – the artist’s subjective and messy private sphere in the studio and the civilization-building cultural cradle of antiquity, as arranged in the museum in Athens – meet in the middle room. Where they blend into a total installation set-up consisting of new works by the artist, as well as works from the artists’ own collection of both their own and others’ works, staged with selected objects (books, LPs, souvenirs, ancient coins, a desk and stones found on the beach, etc.) retrieved from the studio’s vaults to gain new life and enter into new contexts in the gallery.
Thorgej Steen Hansen has worked with photography for many years. He is a visual artist and this is the second exhibition in the gallery. These are powerful, conceptual color photographs.
