Copenhagen Photo Festival will make the city buzz with world-class star photographers and unrivalled audience events
With its most comprehensive event programme ever, the focus of this year’s Copenhagen Photo Festival is to encourage community and the physical experience of photography. From 11 to 21 June, visitors can enjoy talks with Danish film director Christina Rosendahl and the musician Luna Ersahin, develop their own visual language in masterclasses with star photographers such as Roger Ballen and Carolyn Drake, and take part in countless social events and gallery crawls, all aimed at enhancing the experience of photography in good company – at this year’s 30+ exhibition venues.
In keeping with this year’s theme, Scenarios, the festival is inviting visitors to explore new possibilities and realities through photography. In the festival centre at the Royal Theatre and in galleries and museums in the different neighbourhoods of the city – not to mention jaunts to Malmö, Humlebæk, Elsinore and Lyngby – this year’s programme features some major exhibition experiences, including work by Roger Ballen, Carolyn Drake, Helge Skodvin (the Royal Theatre), Søren Solkær (Øksnehallen, Kvægtorvet), Cyprien Gaillard (Simian), Katharina Sieverding (Gammel Strand), Sophie Calle (Louisiana), Christina Capetillo (Fotografisk Center) and many, many others.
This year’s festival represents a unique opportunity for visitors to experience photography in new ways and in the company of other people.
The festival kicks off on 11 June with a Grand Opening at the Royal Theatre.
“We live in an age, in which images have become our main language. We are constantly scrolling, swiping and sharing visual content. And our understanding of the world is hugely shaped by images. On social media and in the news. Naturally, this year’s festival looks at that phenomenon. What we wanted was to enhance the experiences that connect us and to create a sense of community around photography. We look forward to learning more about the strengths and pitfalls of imagery together with visitors to the festival and this year’s exhibitors, and to challenging ourselves and each other through this year’s impressive audience programme,” says Maja Dyrehauge Gregersen, the festival director.
“Photography is an immensely powerful medium which, through our phones and television, has become radically democratised. However, the collective spaces where we pause and reflect on the medium are rather limited. That is why it is crucial for Copenhagen, as both a capital city and a cultural hub, to host events such as Copenhagen Photo Festival, which not only shine a spotlight on the medium itself, but also bring it into the city and into a variety of contexts. I hope this will influence the way we all engage with the medium, the city, and our wider surroundings,” says the City of Copenhagen’s Mayor of Culture and Leisure, Christopher Røhl (RV).

Naked men, Swedish torpedoes, family secrets and women’s lives
On the opening night, 11 June, visitors are invited to an opening speech featuring this year’s headliner, the award-winning artist and Magnum photographer Carolyn Drake. She explores and challenges the way in which we view each other: in photos of naked men in her series Men Untitled; and in the staging of herself as the ideal woman in Glorify Yourself.
Nor should you miss out on the festival’s ‘FREMKALDT’ talks, in which Christina Rosendahl and Liv Helm will discuss dealing with taboos, trauma and family secrets. Jytte Rex and Luna Ersahin will talk about women’s lives and what it means to depart from society’s expectations across generations. Mads Nissen and Morten Pape will talk about conveying stories from the ghettos and gangster environments they have both intensively dealt with in their photography and writing.

Masterclasses og portfolio feedback from respected figures from Denmark and abroad
This year you can take part in workshops led by the festival’s headliners and get feedback on your photography from experts from the Danish and Nordic photography scene. On 12 and 13 June, in nine different masterclasses, the festival’s headliners will provide exclusive insights into processes and practices. On 11 June, there is a unique opportunity to receive professional feedback on your photography from curators, gallerists, artists and photojournalists from the Danish world of art and photography.

World-class photography at the Royal Danish Theatre
For the second year in a row, the historic Balcony Foyer of the Royal Danish Theatre will form the setting for the festival’s main exhibitions, featuring international photography and camera-based art in a league of their own. This year’s headliner, the artist and Magnum photographer Carolyn Drake has been given an entire floor for her comprehensive exhibition Turning the Gaze. This year’s four solo artists – Roger Ballen, Maja Daniels, Rhiannon Adam and Helge Skodvin – are presenting projects never seen before in Denmark, all tackling important current topics: for example, the most profound and secret imaginings of the psyche, witch hunts from the past, all-consuming trips to the moon and the biodiversity crisis. New Nordic voices occupy Refshaleøen
On Refshaleøen, close to Copehagen Contemporary and the popular Reffen Streetfood, the spotlight is on young talent, experimental art and interdisciplinary exchange. Each year, the festival selects a number of young artists, each of whom in their own way reflect the direction in which photography is going:
Futures Nordic Talents 2026. This year’s selected talents – Liv Latricia Habel (DK), Mari Mäntynen (FI), Loulou Buxbom (DK), María Kristín Antonsdóttir (ISL) – explore and reflect on origin and identity in works that are both thought-provoking and humorous.
The programme VÆKST Creatives challenges and engages with the framework of photography. This year audiences can enjoy performance, dance, workshops and audiowalks with the six selected VÆKST Creatives: Alice Presence, Asta Oskarsdottír, Joachim Fleinert, Photofuss & Young Visual Art, Fredrik Fabó and Thomas Seest & Tora Balslev.
Meanwhile, the three Nordic photography schools – DMJX, Oslo Fotokunstskole and Fatamorgana – are presenting exhibitions featuring students’ work in the FRAME building and the exhibition park at Beddingen.

The festival features a myriad of experiences and exhibition openings where the audience can meet artists, industry professionals and new voices. Stjernefotografer i verdensklasse og enestående publikumsoplevelser indtager byen under Copenhagen Photo Festival
Copenhagen Photo Festival sætter fællesskab og den fysiske oplevelse af fotografi i centrum med det mest omfattende eventprogram nogensinde. Den 11.-21. juni kan publikum opleve talks med Christina Rosendahl og musiker Luna Ersahin, udvikle deres eget visuelle sprog på masterclasses med stjernefotografer som Roger Ballen samt deltage i stribevis af sociale events og gallery crawls, der styrker oplevelsen af fotografi i godt selskab til årets mere end 30 udstillingssteder.
I tråd med årets tema ‘Forestillinger | Scenarios’ inviterer festivalen publikum til at gå på opdagelse og afsøge nye muligheder og virkeligheder gennem fotografiet.
Fra festivalens centrum på Det Kongelige Teater til gallerier og museer i byens brokvarterer – og med afstikkere til Malmö, Humlebæk, Helsingør og Lyngby – byder årets program på store udstillingsoplevelser med Roger Ballen, Carolyn Drake, Helge Skodvin (Det Kongelige Teater), Søren Solkær (Øksnehallen, Kvægtorvet), Cyprien Gaillard (Simian), Katharina Sieverding (Gammel Strand), Sophie Calle (Louisiana), Christina Capetillo (Fotografisk Center) og mange, mange andre.

“Vi lever i en tid, hvor billeder er blevet vores primære sprog. Vi scroller, swiper og deler visuelt indhold konstant. Og vores forståelse af verden formes i høj grad gennem billeder. På sociale medier og i nyhederne. Det har vi selvfølgelig fokus på til årets festival. Vi har ønsket at styrke de oplevelser, der forbinder os og skaber fællesskab omkring fotografi. Vi glæder os til at blive klogere på billedsprogets styrker og faldgruber sammen med publikum og årets udstillere og til at udfordre os selv og hinanden gennem årets stærke publikumsprogram, der kun kan opleves under festivalen,” siger festivaldirektør Maja Dyrehauge Gregersen.
“Fotografiet er et enormt stærkt medie, som med vores telefoner og TV er blevet voldsomt demokratiseret. De kollektive rum, hvor vi stopper op og reflekterer over mediet, er imidlertid ret begrænset. Derfor er det afgørende for København som hovedstad og kulturby, at vi har arrangementer som Copenhagen Photo Festival, der ikke bare sætter fokus på mediet, men også får det frem i hele byen og i forskellige kontekster. Jeg håber det vil sætte sig i vores alle sammens omgang med mediet, byen og øvrige omgivelser,” siger kultur-, fritids- og borgerserviceborgmester i Københavns Kommune, Christopher Røhl (RV).

Nøgne mænd, svenske torpedoer, familiehemmeligheder og kvindeliv
På åbningsaftenen den 11. juni inviteres publikum til åbningstalk med årets hovednavn, den prisvindende kunstner og Magnum-fotograf Carolyn Drake, der udforsker og udfordrer vores blik på hinanden gennem fotos af nøgne mænd i serien Men Untitled og iscenesættelser af sig selv som idealkvinde i serien Glorify Yourself.

Fotografi i verdensklasse på Det Kongelige Teater
Det Kongelige Teaters historiske Balkonfoyer danner for andet år rammen om festivalens hovedudstillinger, hvor man kan opleve fotografi og kamerabaseret kunst i international særklasse. Årets hovednavn, kunstner og Magnum-fotograf Carolyn Drake, fylder en hel etage i foyeren med sin omfattende udstilling A Good Dress, og årets fire solokunstnere Roger Ballen, Maja Daniels, Rhiannon Adam og Helge Skodvin udstiller alle projekter, der ikke før har været vist i Danmark, og som går i klinch med vigtige aktuelle emner som psykens dybeste og hemmeligste forestillinger, historiske heksejagter, altopslugende månerejser og biodiversitetskrise. Desuden kan publikum opleve en digitale screenings årets udvalgte CPF Selectees og publikumsudstillingen ‘Forestil dig …?’.

Nye nordiske stemmer indtager Refshaleøen
På Refshaleøen ligger festivalens venue og udstillingspark VÆKST på B&W’s gamle Bedding. Her er der særligt fokus på unge talenter, eksperimenterende kunst og tværfaglig udveksling. Hvert år udvælger festivalen en række unge kunstnere, som på hver sin måde afspejler hvor fotografiet er på vej hen:
Futures Nordic Talents 2026. Dette års udvalgte talenter – Liv Latricia Habel (DK), Mari Mäntynen (FI), Loulou Buxbom (DK), María Kristín Antonsdóttir (ISL) – udforsker og reflekterer over ophav og identitet, og det er både tankevækkende og humoristisk.
VÆKST Creatives er et program, der udfordrer og går i dialog med fotografiets rammer. I år kan publikum derfor opleve både performance, dans, workshops og audiowalks med de seks udvalgte VÆKST Creatives: Alice Presence, Asta Oskarsdottír, Joachim Fleinert, Photofuss & Young Visual Art, Fredrik Fabó og Thomas Seest & Tora Balslev
Desuden kan publikum opleve nye fotografiske stemmer når de tre nordiske fotoskoler DMJX, Oslo Fotokunstskole og Fatamorgana viser udstillinger med de studerende i bygningen FRAME og i udstillingsparken på Beddingen.

Mørke interiører, vægge dekoreret med uhyggelige, kranielignende Art Brut-tegninger og beboet af sære, improviserede skabninger sammensat af afrevne lemmer, dukker, udklædte skeletter og andre foruroligende objekter.
Den anerkendte sydafrikanske kunstner Roger Ballen lokker os ind i en dunkel verden løsrevet fra den virkelighed, vi kender. Med Spirits and Spaces tager Ballens univers en ny drejning og fremtræder for første gang i en afdæmpet farvepalette. Her konfronterer han os med en visualisering af det underbevidste — den menneskelige psykes bizarre kammer af fragmenter og rester, og dets mærkelige, foruroligende og dragende dybder.
Roger Ballens særegne værk konfronterer beskueren med en verden renset for genkendelige, normative og realistiske referencer. Vi møder uvirkelige, absurde visuelle scenarier, der taler deres eget foruroligende sprog og er gennemsyret af referencer til døden og efterlivet. Hvor dystert et aftryk billederne end måtte efterlade, blotlægger de under den umiddelbare uhygge også legende øjeblikke af horror tilsat tragikomik.
I en nutidig kontekst åbner Ballens langsomme udgravning af sindet en næsten glemt dør til de indre kampe, vi alle i et vist omfang kæmper med — kampe, der måske har stået uforløste alt for længe. I en verden, der i stigende grad søger overfladiske, faktuelle, rationelle og ydre forklaringer på mentale tilstande og adfærd, tilbyder Ballens fotografier et rigt paradoksalt og stille forfriskende perspektiv på, hvad det vil sige at bevæge sig ind i sindets mere kaotiske, skjulte og irrationelle lag — dér, hvor de dybeste angst- og frygtstrukturer tager form.
Gloomy interiors, walls decorated with eerie skull-like Art-Brut drawings and inhabited by odd makeshift creatures made of detached limbs, dolls, dressed-up skeletons and other unsettling objects.
Renowned South African artist Roger Ballen lures us into an obscure world detached from reality as we know it. With Spirits and Spaces, Ballen’s universe takes a new turn and appears in a discrete colour palette for the first time. Here he confronts us with a visualisation of the subconscious, the human psyche’s bizarre chamber of fragments and leftovers, and its strange, disturbing, and compelling depths.
Roger Ballen’s distinct work confronts the viewer with a world stripped of familiar, normative, and realistic references. You are faced with unreal, absurd visual scenarios that speak their own unsettling language and roam with references to death and the afterlife. However gloomy an imprint the images may leave, beneath the apparent uncanniness they also unearth playful moments of horror tinged with tragic comedy.
In a contemporary context, Ballen’s slow excavation of the mind opens an almost forgotten door to the inner battles we all struggle with to some extent – battles that may have been left unattended for too long. In a world that increasingly seeks superficial, factual, rational, and external explanations for mental states and behaviour, Ballen’s photographs offer a richly paradoxical and quietly invigorating perspective on what it means to engage with the more chaotic, hidden, and irrational paths into the mind’s deepest anxieties and fears.

Ballen vil gennemgå hver deltagers arbejde og yndlingsbillede og give indblik i sin egen metode til at vurdere fotografier ved hjælp af personlige eksempler på billeder, han har taget gennem sin karriere.

Join a masterclass where participants will receive artistic feedback from Roger Ballen. Ballen will evaluate each participant’s work and favourite image, offering insight into his technique for evaluating one’s own photographs, using personal examples of photographs he has taken throughout his career.

Star-studded Exhibition Programme for Copenhagen Photo Festival: International Stars and Strong Nordic Voices
Copenhagen Photo Festival will feature the acclaimed Magnum photographer and artist Carolyn Drake and the world-renowned photographer Roger Ballen, alongside other leading international names and powerful Nordic voices. The festival opens 11 June 2026 at the Royal Danish Theatre.
This year’s theme is Forestillinger/Scenarios. Copenhagen Photo Festival explores how we use images and narratives to create worlds and new realities, and how today our imaginative power and empathy are at risk in a world that bombards us with images. Where fiction and facts merge like never before. And where dystopia and utopia are often inseparable.
The festival will transform the beautiful, historical Royal Danish Theatre into a vibrant photography hub with a vibrant programme of exhibitions, talks, workshops and a photo market.
Naked men and masked women invert stereotypes
This year’s international headliner is Carolyn Drake, whose work is being presented for the very first time in the Nordic region in a comprehensive solo show. Drake’s photos of naked men and masked women, and her performative self-portraits upend established notions of gender and identity. They are all infused with a generous dose of humour, empathy and anger. Visitors can look forward to a startling universe that questions prevailing conceptions of gender, photography and genres.
Four other stars selected from 1,019 Open Call applicants
In addition to Carolyn Drake, the festival will feature four international stars, who were selected as solo artists from 1,019 applicants in the festival’s 2026 Open Call: Helge Skodvin (NO), Maja Daniels (SE), Rhiannon Adam (US) and Roger Ballen (SA).Over the past four decades the latter has developed a unique, internationally acclaimed black-and-white universe. In his most recent project Spirits and Spaces which will be exhibited in Copenhagen, he has opted to use colours for the very first time, adding new dimensions to his world famous oeuvre.
Each of the four photographers will have their own solo show in the Royal Theatre’s foyer. “Visitors will be joining Rhiannon Adams on her life-changing trip to the moon. Maja Daniels will transport the audience back in time to the age of witch hunts in the forests of Sweden. Helge Skodvin will take them on a safari through Norwegian suburbs in search of endangered animals. The work of Roger Ballen will confront them with a psychological tour de force and a glimpse of the human subconscious,” says Maja Dyrehauge Gregersen, Festival Director.

Digital programme with topical agendas and clear visual storytelling
In the foyer, the festival will also present digital exhibitions of work by six selected artists. As well as tapping into current agendas, all six share a clear connection to this year’s theme and a striking visual storytelling power that expands our notion of what photography can be today. Their works feature such topics as collective and personal memory, political structures, technological future scenarios and alternative realities.
An invitation to reflect on the stories we share
According to the Festival Director, what distinguishes the ten selected projects is their dramatic, highly inventive approach, their innovative practice and the consistency of their visual narratives.
“Through art and documentary photography, performance, archive material and staged pictorial stories, they invite visitors to reflect on the power and importance of ideas and imagination – and the scenarios we create for ourselves and each other,” says Maja Dyrehauge Gregersen.
Photo exhibitions and events in a historic setting
All the exhibitions will be presented in the magnificent, historic foyer of the Royal Danish Theatre in Copenhagen from 11 to 17 June 2026. Every day, in addition to visiting the atmospheric space of this historic theatre – which usually requires a ticket for a performance – guests can attend a variety of events; from the opening event on 11 June to talks, portfolio reviews, workshops and various guided tours to photography museums and exhibition venues in Copenhagen.
The festival programme is being continuously updated, and the festival expects tit to be finalised 1 May. Ticket sales for admission to the festival centre at the Old Stage are already open. Other tickets for workshops, talks etc. will be released on an ongoing basis from mid March.
About Carolyn Drake
Copenhagen Photo Festival is presenting the first-ever solo exhibition in the Nordic region of work by the award-winning artist Carolyn Drake.
Drake is a Guggenheim Fellow and Magnum photographer. Her impressive list of credits includes a comprehensive solo show at the Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation in Paris.
The exhibition at Copenhagen Photo Festival features works from Drake’s most recent, award-winning projects – Knit Club (2012–2020), Men Untitled (2020–2023) and Glorify Yourself (2020–2023) – which strikingly and humorously tackle society’s prevailing identity norms, expanding our understanding of each other and of ourselves.
She is represented by the Yancey Richardson Gallery in New York.

Stjernespækket udstillingsprogram til Copenhagen Photo Festival: Internationale hovednavne og stærke nordiske stemmer
Til Copenhagen Photo Festival kan gæster fra den 11. juni 2026 opleve den anerkendte Magnum-fotograf og kunstner Carolyn Drake samt den verdenskendte fotograf Roger Ballen – og andre markante internationale navne og stærke nordiske stemmer på Det Kongelige Teaters Gamle Scene.
Under temaet Forestillinger / Scenarios undersøger Copenhagen Photo Festival vores evner til at skabe verdener og nye virkeligheder gennem billeder og fortællinger, og hvordan vores forestillingsevne og empati sættes på spil i en billedbåret tid, hvor fiktion og fakta griber ind i hinanden som aldrig før. Og hvor dystopi og utopi ofte går hånd i hånd.
Til festivalen forvandles de smukke historiske rammer på Det Kongelige Teater til et levende mødested for fotografi med udstillinger, samtaler, workshops og et fotomarked.
Nøgne mænd og maskerede kvinder vender stereotyper på hovedet
Årets internationale hovednavn er Carolyn Drake, der præsenteres for første gang i Norden med en omfattende soloudstilling.
Med billeder af nøgne mænd og maskerede kvinder samt performative selvportrætter vender Drake etablerede forestillinger om køn og identitet på hovedet – tilsat en generøs portion humor, empati og ikke mindst vrede. Publikum kan se frem til at træde ind i et overraskende univers, der stiller spørgsmål til gængse forestillinger om køn, fotografi og genrer.
Fire øvrige hovednavne udvalgt blandt 1.019 Open Call-ansøgere
Ud over Carolyn Drake præsenterer festivalen fire internationale hovednavne, som er udvalgt til solokunstnere blandt 1.019 ansøgere til festivalens Open Call 2026: Helge Skodvin (NO), Maja Daniels (SE), Rhiannon Adam (IE/US) og Roger Ballen (SA).
Sidstnævnte har gennem en menneskealder udviklet sit helt eget berømte sort-hvide univers men har med sit nyeste projekt og bogudgivelse valgt at bruge farver for første gang nogensinde.
De fire fotografer indtager etagerne i foyeren på Det Kongelige Teater med hver deres soloudstilling.
”Publikum kommer med på Rhiannon Adams livsforandrende rejse til månen, på en historisk tidsrejse tilbage til heksejagterne i de svenske skove med Maja Daniels, på safari efter truede dyr i de norske forstæder med Helge Skodvin og ikke mindst på en psykologisk tour de force ned i den menneskelige underbevidsthed med Roger Ballen,” beretter festivalens direktør Maja Dyrehauge Gregersen.

Digitalt program med aktuelle dagsordner og tydelig visuel fortællekraft
Festivalen præsenterer desuden seks udvalgte kunstnere til en digital udstilling i foyeren.
Fælles for dem er udover at de tapper ind i aktuelle dagsordner også en klar forbindelse til årets tema samt en tydelig visuel fortællekraft, der udvider forståelsen af, hvad fotografi kan være i dag – med emner som kollektiv og personlig erindring, politiske strukturer, teknologiske fremtidsscenarier og alternative virkeligheder.
Inviterer os til at reflektere over de fortællinger, vi deler
De i alt ti udvalgte projekter udmærker sig ved deres opsigtsvækkende og originale tilgange, deres innovative praksis og konsekvens de visuelle fortællinger, fremhæver festivaldirektøren:
”Gennem kunst- og dokumentarfotografi, performance, arkivmateriale og iscenesatte billedfortællinger inviteres publikum til at reflektere over forestillingens kraft og betydning – og de scenarier, vi skaber for os selv og hinanden,” siger Maja Dyrehauge Gregersen.
Fotoudstillinger og -events i historiske rammer
Samtlige udstillinger kan opleves i den storslåede, historiske foyer på Det Kongelige Teaters Gamle Scene i København den 11.-17. juni 2026.
I tillæg til et besøg i teatrets stemningsfulde rum, der ellers kun kan opleves ved at indløse en teaterbillet, kan publikum hver dag deltage i forskellige events; fra åbningseventen den 11. juni til talks, portfolio reviews, workshops og forskellige guidede ture til museer og udstillingssteder med fokus på fotografi i København.
Festivalprogrammet bliver løbende opdateret og forventes endelig klart 1. maj.
Entrébilletter til festivalcentrum på Gamle Scene kan købes allerede nu. Øvrige billetter til workshops, talks mv. bliver løbende frigivet.

Om Carolyn Drake
Den prisvindende kunstner Carolyn Drake får på Copenhagen Photo Festival sin første soloudstilling i Norden.
Drake er Guggenheim Fellow og Magnum-fotograf og har blandt andet haft en omfattende soloudstilling på Henri Cartier-Bresson Foundation i Paris.
Udstillingen på Copenhagen Photo Festival præsenterer værker fra Drakes seneste og prisbelønnede projekter Knit Club (2012–2020), Men Untitled (2020–2023) og Glorify Yourself (2020–2023), der overrraskende og humoristisk tager livtag med fremherskende identitetsnormer og udvider vores forståelse for hinanden og os selv.

Dive into the visions of the solo artists 2026
Four selected solo artists, Roger Ballen, Rhiannon Adam, Maja Daniels and Helge Skodvin, will each present a solo exhibition each at The Royal Theatre this summer. However, you can already now join Rhiannon Adams on her life-changing journey to the moon, Maja Daniels’ historical journey back in time to the witch hunts in the Swedish forests, Helge Skodvin on a safari for endangered animals in the Norwegian suburbs and, not least, Roger ballen on a psychological tour de force into the human subconscious.
Magical thinking, mass detention and manipulated realities
In addition the six selected artists from the call, the CPF Selectees 2026, Ana María Arévalo Gosen, Adam Rouhana, Antone Dolezal & Lara Shipley, Cassandra Klos, Mohamed Hassan and Sasha Velichko showcase their work digitally in the theatre foyer.
With topics spanning collective and personal memory, political structures, mass detention, manipulation and AI absurdism, technological future scenarios and alternative realities, the artists each bring genuine urgency and consistency to the festival program as they unfold their visual projects.
