Exclusive Artist Talk on Refshaleøen: Elina Brotherus on Alvar Aalto

Elina Brotherus, acclaimed photo and video artist, and Ulrikke Neergaard, director of the KØS Museum of Art in Public Spaces will engage in a discussion at Copenhagen Photo Festival, Refshaleøen on the 15th of June from 15.00–16.00, through a collaborative effort between Copenhagen Photo Festival, KØS Museum of Art in Public Spaces, and Martin Asbæk Gallery. Embark on a captivating dialogue between Brotherus and Neergaard as they unravel the mysteries behind Brotherus' compelling imagery within Alvar Aalto's architectural realm.

The conversation will delve into Brotherus' latest exhibition, “IN THE ARCHITECT'S HOUSE: ELINA BROTHERUS ON ALVAR AALTO," exploring her portrayal of fictional female figures within Alvar Aalto's architectural masterpieces in Finland and France. They will examine Brotherus' manipulation of reflections and mirrors in her photography, as well as her unique ability to create three-dimensional depth on a flat surface, resulting in her signature painterly quality.

About The Artist

Elina Brotherus' art oscillates between autobiographical and art historical approaches. Initially focused on subjective experiences, her work has evolved to explore the human figure, landscape, and the artist-model relationship. Based in Helsinki, Finland, and Avallon, France, Brotherus holds an MA in Photography from the University of Art and Design Helsinki and an MSc in Chemistry from the University of Helsinki. Among her honors are the Artist Professorship Grant from the Arts Promotion Centre Finland and Carte Blanche PMU, France. Her works are featured in over 80 public collections worldwide, including the Pompidou Centre in Paris, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, LACMA in Los Angeles, and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm.

Mød Elina Brotherus, en af Finlands mest internationalt anerkendte foto- og videokunstnere, i en samtale med Ulrikke Neergaard, direktør på KØS Museum for kunst i det offentlige rum, under Copenhagen Photo Festival på festivalpladsen på Refshaleøen.

Samtalen vil kredse om Elina Brotherus’ aktuelle udstilling ”I ARKITEKTENS HUS - ELINA BROTHERUS OM ALVAR AALTO” på KØS, som tager os helt med ind i hjertet af Alvar Aaltos arkitektur i tre nye fotografiske værkserier, hvor Elina Brotherus optræder i rollen som imaginære kvindeskikkelser i fire centrale Aalto bygninger i hhv. Finland og Frankrig.

Elina Brotherus og Ulrikke Neergaard dykker ned i Brotherus’ leg med refleksioner og spejle i fotografiet samt hendes helt særlige intensitet og sans for at komponere tredimensionelle rum på en flade, som giver hendes fotografier den påfaldende maleriske kvalitet, hun er berømt for.

Talken er et samarbejde mellem Copenhagen Photo Festival, KØS Museum for kunst i det offentlige rum og Martin Asbæk Gallery.

Samtalen foregår på engelsk, og der er fri adgang for gæster med festivalbillet.

Om Elina Brotherus
Elina Brotherus’ kunst har vekslet mellem selvbiografiske og kunsthistoriske tilgange. Hendes tidlige serie om personlige oplevelser har givet plads til værker, der undersøger den menneskelige figur og landskabet, forholdet mellem kunstneren og modellen. Elina Brotherus bor og arbejder Avallon, Frankrig og i Helsinki, Finland. Hun har en MA i fotografi fra University of Art and Design Helsinki (nu Aalto University) og en MSc i kemi fra University of Helsinki. Hun er blandt andet blevet tildelt kunstnerprofessoratstipendiet fra Arts Promotion Centre Finland (2022-2026), Carte blanche PMU, Frankrig (2017), den finske statspris for fotografi (2008) og Prix Niépce of Gens d’image (2005). Hendes værker er en del af over 80 offentlige samlinger, herunder Pompidou Centret, Paris, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Danmark, LACMA, Los Angeles og Moderna Museet, Stockholm.

Meet Elina Brotherus, one of Finland’s most internationally acclaimed photo and video artists, in conversation with Ulrikke Neergaard, director at KØS Museum of Art in Public Spaces, during Copenhagen Photo Festival at the festival venue at Refshaleøen.

The conversation will be centered around Elina Brotherus’ current exhibition “IN THE ARCHITECHT’S HOUSE ELINA BROTHERUS ON ALVAR AALTO”, that takes us deep into the heart of Alvar Aalto’s architecture, in her three new photographic series, where Elina Brotherus appears in the role of fictional female figures in four key Aalto buildings in Finland and France.

In the conversation Elina Brotherus and Ulrikke Neergaard will be delving into Brotherus' play with reflections and mirrors in her photography, as well as her unique intensity and ability to compose three-dimensional spaces on a flat surface, that gives her photographs the striking painterly quality she is renowned for.

The conversation will be in English with free entrance for festival pass holders.

The talk is a collaboration between Copenhagen Photo Festival, KØS Museum of Art in Public Spaces and Martin Asbæk Gallery.

About Elina Brotherus
Elina Brotherus’ art has been alternating between autobiographical and art historical approaches. Her early series on subjective experiences gave way to works dealing with the human figure and the landscape, the relation of the artist and the model Elina Brotherus lives and works in Helsinki, Finland, and Avallon, France. She has an MA degree in Photography from the University of Art and Design Helsinki (now Aalto University) and an MSc in Chemistry from the University of Helsinki. She has been awarded, among others, the Artist Professorship Grant of the Arts Promotion Centre Finland (2022-2026), Carte blanche PMU, France (2017), the Finnish State Prize for Photography (2008), and the Prix Niépce of Gens d’image (2005).
