ABOUT EXHIBITIONS
The exhibition Breaking Darkness at Nikolaj Kunsthal is a journey through the cinematic world of Lars von Trier, presented in five installations created especially for the special Kunsthal space. In a scenographic setting, made up of cinematic artefacts, sound and light, viewers can discover new facets of the director's work, including through the prism of a feminist interpretation of his female characters.
Presented at Leica Store Copenhagen, Jacob Aue Sobol's exhibition The Core is a moving encounter with the human inside. The raw, black-and-white photographs reveal the emotional essences of individuals, deprived of masks and roles. The artist explores what is common and universal - the desire for intimacy, authenticity, and the beauty that comes from being in true contact with oneself and others.
Portrait of Qatar's Bedouins presents the highly intimate yet artistically refined photographs of Jette Bang, who documented the lives of Qatar's nomadic tribes for three months in 1959. Balancing between documentary and poetic composition, her photographs presented in The David Collection reveal the daily life, relationships, and culture of the Bedouins with a unique sensitivity and sense of form.
Astrid Kruse Jensen's Places Beyond Places is a reflective journey through spaces that become more than just physical. They intertwine with memory, dreams, and emotions. Working with out-of-date Polaroid film, the artist combines the transience of the moment with the permanence of memories to create photographs that balance between presence and absence, past and present. The artist will present her works herself at Martin Asbæk Gallery.

In 2025, Martin Asbæk Gallery celebrates its 20th anniversary. The gallery will mark the occasion with its annual summer exhibition, Summer in the City, which, in honor of this milestone anniversary, will extend across all three floors of the gallery. In addition to its represented artists, the exhibition will also feature a guest artist, whose identity will be revealed leading up to the opening.

Dette års udgave af Martin Asbæk Gallerys årlige sommerudstilling, Summer in the City, markerer galleriets 20-års-jubilæum. Traditionen tro præsenterer galleriets egne kunstnere nye værker side om side med gæstekunstnere, der i år tæller en række kunstnere, danske såvel som internationale, der tidligere har udstillet i galleriets rammer.
Mens galleriets profil dækker alle medier, vil udstillingen også præsentere værker af fremtrædende fotobaserede kunstnere såsom Trine Søndergaard, Elina Brotherus, Nicolai Howalt, Astrid Kruse Jensen, Adam Jeppesen m.fl.

Exclusive Artist Talk on Refshaleøen: Elina Brotherus on Alvar Aalto

Elina Brotherus, acclaimed photo and video artist, and Ulrikke Neergaard, director of the KØS Museum of Art in Public Spaces will engage in a discussion at Copenhagen Photo Festival, Refshaleøen on the 15th of June from 15.00–16.00, through a collaborative effort between Copenhagen Photo Festival, KØS Museum of Art in Public Spaces, and Martin Asbæk Gallery. Embark on a captivating dialogue between Brotherus and Neergaard as they unravel the mysteries behind Brotherus' compelling imagery within Alvar Aalto's architectural realm.
The conversation will delve into Brotherus' latest exhibition, “IN THE ARCHITECT'S HOUSE: ELINA BROTHERUS ON ALVAR AALTO," exploring her portrayal of fictional female figures within Alvar Aalto's architectural masterpieces in Finland and France. They will examine Brotherus' manipulation of reflections and mirrors in her photography, as well as her unique ability to create three-dimensional depth on a flat surface, resulting in her signature painterly quality.
About The Artist
Elina Brotherus' art oscillates between autobiographical and art historical approaches. Initially focused on subjective experiences, her work has evolved to explore the human figure, landscape, and the artist-model relationship. Based in Helsinki, Finland, and Avallon, France, Brotherus holds an MA in Photography from the University of Art and Design Helsinki and an MSc in Chemistry from the University of Helsinki. Among her honors are the Artist Professorship Grant from the Arts Promotion Centre Finland and Carte Blanche PMU, France. Her works are featured in over 80 public collections worldwide, including the Pompidou Centre in Paris, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark, LACMA in Los Angeles, and the Moderna Museet in Stockholm.
