TALK · FREMKALDT · Mads Nissen & Morten Pape in conversation on communicating human stories from marginalised environments

How do you communicate what resists being brought into the light? And how do you gain access to the most closed, criminal environments? What ethical considerations does this work entail – and how does it find its way from the shadows into public discourse?

With conversation as a kind of “developing fluid”, audiences can experience award-winning photographer Mads Nissen and author Morten Pape in dialogue about social inheritance, indignation, and personal storytelling. What sacrifices does it take to document the truth – whether on film or on paper? And what ethical considerations come with stepping forward to tell stories of drug lords, young criminal “torpedos”, and the social inequalities of marginalised urban communities?

Join us for an informal evening of inspiring conversation in the intimate setting of the Balcony Foyer at the Royal Danish Theatre. Nissen and Pape have each made a significant mark in their respective fields.

Award-winning photographer Mads Nissen (b. 1979) is a documentary photographer working with contemporary social issues. He has won the World Press Photo of the Year three times and received more than 100 international awards for his work. Most recently, he was named Danish Press Photographer of the Year 2025. In spring 2026, he will publish his fourth book, Sangre Blanca (GOST Books), on the global cocaine trade.

Author Morten Pape (b. 1986) trained as a screenwriter at the alternative film school Super16. He made his literary debut in 2015 with Planen, which received the BogForum Debut Award. In 2018, he followed up with Guds bedste børn, which won the DR Novel Prize. The third and final novel in his Amager trilogy, I ruiner (2021), was awarded Politiken’s Literature Prize. His most recent publications, Nøglebarn and Månebarn, explore his parents’ family histories. Morten Pape received a three-year working grant from the Danish Arts Foundation in 2019, and his novels have sold more than 200,000 copies.
