SOS – Reddet på åbent hav er en særudstilling om verdenshistoriens største civile redningsaktion til søs. Udstillingen fortæller om de dramatiske døgn i 1975, hvor et dansk fragtskib reddede 3.628 vietnamesiske flygtninge i havsnød.
I udstillingen skildres de dramatiske og rørende døgn, hvor de mange flygtningene blev reddet fra en uvis skæbne. Udstillingens kerne er nutidige portrætfotos og interviews med tre søfolk og tre af de vietnamesiske flygtninge, der kom til at bo i Danmark. Publikum kommer bl.a. tæt på den unge sømand, der står på dækket og hjælper udmattede flygtninge ombord. De møder telegrafisten, den seksårige pige på flugt og den mor, der i flugtens kaos må efterlade sin femårige datter i Vietnam. Hvert interview bringer en ny brik til fortællingen, der bliver foldet ud gennem historiske fotos, genstande, baggrundsviden, dokumenter og optagelser fra lokale, private og rederiet Mærsks arkiver. Udstillingen viser også, hvor de seks mennesker er i dag, og hvad redningen har betydet for dem.
Publikum møder Ky-Tu Dang, Quyen Quyen Nguyen-Cong, Kim Dung Dasilva, Søren Andersen, Erik Marcher Hansen og Martin Holroyd. Alle seks var unge, da de oplevede den skelsættende begivenhed på egen krop i 1975. Nu fortæller de historien, som de husker den her 50 år efter.
De medvirkende er portrætteret af fotograf Farzad Soleimani og interviewet af forfatter og museets journalist, Heidi Vesterberg.

SOS – Rescued on the High Seas is a special exhibition about the largest civilian sea rescue operation in world history. The exhibition recounts the dramatic days in 1975 when a Danish cargo ship rescued 3,628 Vietnamese refugees in distress at sea.
The exhibition depicts the dramatic and moving days during which the many refugees were saved from an uncertain fate. At the heart of the exhibition are contemporary portrait photographs and interviews with three seamen and three of the Vietnamese refugees who went on to settle in Denmark. Visitors get a close-up view of, among others, the young sailor standing on deck helping exhausted refugees aboard. They meet the telegraph operator, the six-year-old girl on the run, and the mother who, in the chaos of the escape, had to leave her five-year-old daughter behind in Vietnam. Each interview adds a new piece to the narrative, which unfolds through historical photographs, artefacts, background information, documents and footage from local, private and Maersk shipping company archives. The exhibition also shows where the six people are today and what the rescue has meant to them.
Visitors will meet Ky-Tu Dang, Quyen Quyen Nguyen-Cong, Kim Dung Dasilva, Søren Andersen, Erik Marcher Hansen and Martin Holroyd. All six were young when they experienced this momentous event first-hand in 1975. Now, 50 years on, they recount the story as they remember it.
The participants are portrayed by photographer Farzad Soleimani and interviewed by writer and museum journalist Heidi Vesterberg.

Udstillingen udforsker Østersøens skjulte verden af skibsvrag, hvor tusindvis af velbevarede vrag ligger som tidskapsler fra fortiden. Gennem stemningsfulde undervandsfotografier føres publikum ind i opdagelsens øjeblik, hvor lyset afslører skibe frosset i tid.
Et centralt fokus er det danske krigsskib Gribshunden, som sank i 1495, og giver indblik i kongeligt liv, søkrig og handel gennem bjærgede genstande.
Udstillingen rummer også samtidskunstneriske fortolkninger: poetiske papirværker lavet af tang og plantefibre, en stor fantasitegning af Gribshunden samt abstrakte fotografiske værker baseret på sonar-billeder. Samlet skaber det en sanselig oplevelse, hvor historie, mystik og fantasi smelter sammen og giver plads til publikums egen nysgerrighed.

The exhibition explores the hidden world of shipwrecks in the Baltic Sea, where thousands of remarkably well-preserved wrecks rest as time capsules of past events. Through atmospheric underwater photography, visitors are drawn into the moment of discovery, where light reveals ships frozen in time.
A central focus is the Danish warship Gribshunden, which sank in 1495, offering insight into royal life, maritime warfare, and trade through recovered artifacts.
The exhibition also features contemporary artistic interpretations: poetic paper works made from sea materials, a large-scale fantasy drawing of Gribshunden, and abstract photographic works based on sonar images. Together, these elements create an immersive experience combining history, mystery, and imagination, inviting visitors to reflect and form their own interpretations of the unknown.

På M/S Museet for Søfart kan du opleve et udvalg af fotografier fra det internationale projekt Life at Sea; et internationalt fotoarkiv skabt af søfarende selv.
Projektet blev lanceret under Covid-19-pandemien, hvor lukkede grænser efterlod op mod 400.000 søfarende strandet til søs. De blev nu inviteret til at dele deres egne billeder for at dokumentere de menneskelige konsekvenser af en ellers usynlig krise.
Siden da er det blevet til en årlig fotokonkurrence og et stadigt voksende arkiv, der giver et sjældent indblik i livet for søfolk i dag. Storslåede, hjertevarme og oplysende billeder, der indfanger både arbejdets krav og livets rytme ombord. Her møder vi et liv præget af isolation, hjemve og hårde fysiske betingelser, men også af faglig stolthed og et stærkt fællesskab.
Billederne viser det ekstraordinære og hverdagen side om side. Mødet med naturens kræfter og havets farer som pirater og krig. Fartøjernes majestætiske skala og det endeløse arbejde med at vedligeholde hver centimeter af dem. Stilheden mellem vagterne, måltiderne og samværet. Onlinekontakten til dem derhjemme.

At the M/S Maritime Museum, you can view a selection of photographs from the international project ‘Life at Sea’; an international photo archive created by seafarers themselves.
The project was launched during the Covid-19 pandemic, when closed borders left up to 400,000 seafarers stranded at sea. They were invited to share their own images to document the human consequences of an otherwise invisible crisis.
Since then, it has evolved into an annual photo competition and an ever-growing archive, offering a rare insight into the lives of seafarers today. Magnificent, heart-warming and enlightening images that capture both the demands of the work and the rhythm of life on board. Here we encounter a life marked by isolation, homesickness and harsh physical conditions, but also by professional pride and a strong sense of community.
The images show the extraordinary and the everyday side by side. The encounter with the forces of nature and the dangers of the sea, such as pirates and war. The majestic scale of the vessels and the endless work of maintaining every inch of them. The quiet moments between watches, meals and socialising. Online contact with those back home.
Come out to sea and see seafaring from the inside – through the moments the seafarers themselves have chosen to share.
