En ny fotoudstilling sætter fokus på hverdagslivet i Østgrønland i 1950’erne og 60’erne. Under titlen ”Daamani – Dengang i Østgrønland” præsenteres 80 fotografier taget af Arkaluk Bianco i Tasiilaq og bygderne omkring. Arkaluk Bianco (1921-1986) var butiksbestyrer og postmester – men også en foregangsmand og en markant personlighed i lokalsamfundet. Han var tidligt ude med kameraet og havde et særligt blik for sin samtid. Ud over at fotografere familie og begivenheder dokumenterede han mennesker i byen, arbejdsliv, nye bygninger og sporerne af en kultur i forandring.
Udstillingen giver et sjældent indblik i en periode som ofte omtales, men kun i begrænset omfang er dokumenteret visuelt. Det er tiden lige før og under den danske modernisering for alvor satte ind – en brydningstid præget af udvikling og store samfundsforandringer. Biancos fotografier viser et samfund med stolthed, virkelyst og identitet i bevægelse. Billederne har stor kulturhistorisk betydning. At de er taget af en lokal grønlandsk fotograf – og ikke en udefrakommende – gør dem helt særlige. De udfylder et tomrum i den kollektive bevidsthed om Østgrønlands nyere historie og giver ansigt til en generation, hvis liv og hverdag sjældent er blevet dokumenteret. For mange i Østgrønland er der tale om forældre, bedsteforældre og familiemedlemmer, som måske aldrig tidligere er set på fotografi. De fleste portrætterede er identificeret med navn.
Alle fotografierne indgår i bogen Dagligliv i Ammassalik, udgivet i efteråret 2024 på Aarhus Universitetsforlag (grønlandsk udgave: Ammassalimmi inuuner nalinginnaasoq). Udstillingen er blevet til i et samarbejde mellem Nauja Bianco og Helene Brochmann.
A new photo exhibition focuses on everyday life in East Greenland in the 1950s and 60s. Under the title “Daamani – Back in East Greenland”, 80 photographs taken by Arkaluk Bianco in Tasiilaq and the surrounding settlements are presented. Arkaluk Bianco (1921-1986) was a store manager and postmaster – but also a pioneer and a distinctive personality in the local community. He was out with the camera early and had a special eye for his time. In addition to photographing family and events, he documented people in the city, working life, new buildings and the traces of a changing culture.
The exhibition provides a rare insight into a period that is often mentioned, but has only been documented visually to a limited extent. This is the time just before and during the Danish modernization in earnest – a time of upheaval characterized by development and major social changes. Bianco’s photographs show a society with pride, a desire to act and an identity in motion. The images have great cultural-historical significance. The fact that they were taken by a local Greenlandic photographer – and not an outsider – makes them very special. They fill a void in the collective consciousness of East Greenland’s recent history and give a face to a generation whose lives and everyday lives have rarely been documented. For many in East Greenland, these are parents, grandparents and family members who may never have been seen in a photograph before. Most of the people portrayed are identified by name.
All the photographs are included in the book Daily Life in Ammassalik, published in the fall of 2024 by Aarhus University Press (Greenlandic edition: Ammassalimmi inuuner nalinginnaasoq). The exhibition has been created in collaboration between Nauja Bianco and Helene Brochmann.

I de historiske rammer på Christianshavns havnefront kan man opleve alt fra kunstudstillinger, koncerter og film til events og foredrag. Vi viser såvel etablerede og velkendte kunstnere som nye og endnu ukendte. Vi lægger stor vægt på formidlingen af den nordatlantiske kultur og tilbyder omvisninger i vores kunstudstillinger og pakhusets historie, ligesom vi har en skoletjeneste, hvor børn og unge præsenteres for de tre landes kunst og kulturer.

Nordatlantens Brygge is a cultural center where you can experience art and culture from the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland and the rest of the Nordic region. In the historic setting on Christianshavn’s waterfront, you can experience everything from art exhibitions, concerts and films to events and lectures. We show both established and well-known artists as well as new and unknown ones. We place great emphasis on the dissemination of North Atlantic culture and offer guided tours of our art exhibitions and the history of the warehouse, and we also have a school service where children and young people are introduced to the art and cultures of the three countries.
