LARS DYRENDOM
„GL/DK“
Lars Dyrendom (b. 1981) is an artist based in Sweden. His artistic practice revolves around photographic archives and collections. A returning theme in his works is how humans as groups behave and act in relation to their surrounding and environment.
Greenland through the archives
Project: „GL/DK“ (2018-ongoing)
GL/DK explores Denmark’s enduring gaze toward Greenland, intertwining national narratives with Dyrendom’s own position as a Dane who has never visited the country. Drawing on archival material, his practice reappropriates images and objects to reveal the colonial structures still embedded in the Danish view of Greenland, despite its formal end in 1953.
Methodical and layered, his work unfolds in series that both stand alone and interconnect, exposing the ways archives shape political, cultural, and emotional meanings. Dialogue is central to his process—emerging from his dyslexia and the collaborative nature of refining texts—and has become a vital method through which he learns from and engages others.
Through conversations, reconfigurations, and evolving presentations, Dyrendom’s projects invite audiences to see photographs not as fixed records but as layered constructs where norms, ideologies, and human experiences overlap. Each iteration becomes a unique constellation of images, texts, and media, reflecting the ongoing negotiation of history and representation.
GL/DK was presented with a set of archival images and in two publications with texts by Naja Dyrendom Graugaard and Martine Lind Krebs.
The Camera House presenting GL/DK by Lars Dyrendom was designed and built by Emma Svarre Hjerrild, Magnus Tollnes Kjærnes, Trygg Sigbjørn Østhagen Hamar and Louise August Kryger, Bachelor students from the Institute of Architecture and Design, Royal Danish Academy, under the supervision of Architect and teacher Kristian Hansen, from Marstal Søfartsmuseum. Head of the Bachelor program is Architect, Associate Professor Jacob Sebastian Bang.
His participation was supported by the Nordic-Baltic Mobility Programme for Culture.
