To the unpopular girls is a personal project that explores the social dynamics of her childhood; the artist reached out to eight people who once bullied her, inviting them to meet for a conversation and photo session. The project culminated in a book built of interviews, portraits and archive material – from screenshots to photographs and paintings.

The project is driven by Gad’s curiosity to get to know what drove her bullies and how they reflect on that time period, and she is seeking answers to the questions shes been asking herself throughout the years. “A reaction. That’s probably what we were looking for. Depending on your reaction, we indirectly evaluated whether it was worth continuing or not. When you responded like you did, we evaluated that you were an easy victim.”

Today the bullies are no longer involved in her life, but the nervousness of if they will start commenting on photos or show up at public talks still lumes over Gad. I spend a lot of time wondering who they are and what they come from. And do they remember me?
