KRISTIAN SØNDERSTRUP GRANQUIST’S FLOWER SERIES TAKES US ALONG ON HIS DAILY WALKS IN THE NEIGOURHOOD

The exhibition features flowers which photographer Kristian Sønderstrup-Granquist has found on his daily walks in his neighbourhood over the past six years. These are flowers that are lying, broken off, lost, or abandoned on the street.
Random motifs materialise before him, in the things that he finds, rather than being something that in advance is chosen.

These objects found awakens a desire to show others what he sees. Nevertheless, the photographs are carefully planned, the object, in this case an old flower is meticulously cared for, observed by Granquist until he decides it it ready to be portrayed. The often fragile, perhaps withered flowers are picked up and taken home, where they lie, waiting, until the motif ripens. This happens when the flower’s tactility or colour is condensed or intensified, and its character materialises and unfolds. Fare from all flowers that are brought back to the studio can mature and become motifs, and for some the window for capturing this specific moment passes by. The work of finding and highlighting the flower’s character and expression becomes a sort of documentation, if you will, a portrait of each of these forgotten flowers.

These portraits are presented to an audience, inviting you to explore and seek out beauty and character in these abandoned objects. A search we easily can forget. For Granquist it is an exercise in slowing down, taking the time to observe ones everyday surroundings and routines, finding discarded items and portraying the beauty in them.

PORTRAYING FLOWERS
For Granquist portrait photography has always been a fascinating practice, capturing a persons character and essence. A fleeting moment with a few shoots and it is done! This is of course not quite the case and for Granquist a practice he has over the years, met with a reverend humility and has always come prepared for the task. The same can be said with his so-called Flower Portraits. At first glance these works are in many ways minimalistisk, where all the unnecessary seems striped away. It almost juxtaposes a scientific registration of specimens for a biological archive. Their compositions are simple, always with the object centered and at first glance perhaps void of any story or poetic fabulation. However, this is when it becomes interesting to the viewer, drawing you nearer the object. A curiosity to the object arises, you might physically come closer, thus creating a connection to the viewer, inviting you to see the innate character and story defined in the flowers’ withered intensified tactility, colour and shape. A hidden beauty now illuminated is exposed in Granquist’s portrait series of flowers.
