Elina Brotherus · IN THE ARCHITECT’S HOUSE – ELINA BROTHERUS ON ALVAR AALTO – PHOTOGRAPHS WITH A PAINTING-LIKE QUALITY

Elina Brotherus is one of Finland’s most internationally acclaimed artists. Her three new photographic series are shown for the first time in Denmark in a collaboration between KØS Museum of Art in Public Spaces and the Alvar Aalto Museum. In the exhibition IN THE ARCHITECT’S HOUSE – ELINA BROTHERUS ON ALVAR AALTO – PHOTOGRAPHS WITH A PAINTING-LIKE QUALITY, she occupies four architectural masterpieces designed by the world-renowned architect and designer Alvar Aalto, including his private villa and summer house. Her elegantly distanced and yet striking presence invites us into Aalto’s architecture and allows us to create a connection to the architecture and design that is rooted in our Scandinavian cultural identity.

Bortherus breathes life into our Scandinavian cultural heritage

Brotherus’ photographic works remind us just how big a role the spaces we live our lives in play for our well-being and our self-understanding. The interiors of the series are given a whole new life in the masterfully composed images, while the human presence creates a personal connection to the architecture and gives the feeling that the house’s residents have only just left us for a while and let the guest, Elina Brotherus’ fictional female characters, settle down in the meantime.

PHOTOGRAPHS WITH A PAINTING-LIKE QUALITY Elina Brotherus’ photographs capture the importance of light for Aalto’s architecture in a wonderful way that creates a rare intensity in the images. An intensity that, together with Brotherus’ sense of composing three-dimensional spaces on a flat surface, gives her photographs the striking painting-like quality for which she is known.

About Elina Brotherus

Elina Brotherus’ (b. 1972) art has alternated between autobiographical and art historical approaches. Her current practice consists, among other things, of architectural photographs, as in the series from the Aalto buildings. Elina Brotherus lives and works in Avallon, France, and Helsinki, Finland. She has an MA in photography from the University of Art and Design Helsinki (now Aalto University) and has been awarded, among other things, the artist professorship grant from the Arts Promotion Center Finland (2022-2026), Carte Blanche PMU, France (2017), the Finnish State Prize for Photography (2008) and Prix Niépce of Gens d’Image (2005). Her works are part of more than 80 museum collections, including the Pompidou Centre, Paris, Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark, LACMA, Los Angeles, and Moderna Museet, Stockholm.

In 2025, Elina Brotherus presents a new exhibition at the Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg – the only museum outside Finland designed by Alvar Aalto. The exhibition is created in dialogue with the museum’s iconic architecture and selected works from the collection.
