Lene Harbo & Jörg Koopmann · A Brilliant Title

Naples, a European metropolis of 3 million people at the foot of a volcano, barely detecting its own structural transformation, had an unexpected outburst of collective pride on May 4th 2023: The local football-team celebrated as national champion, winning over all financially and success pampered northern competitors.

A pride that finds an easy form of satisfaction in the title, but a feeling which, however, is not reflected in a daily life of inefficiencies, deficiencies and substantial hardship. Nevertheless, the city turned into a seamless white-blue surface as urban phenomenon – an omnipresent, informal formalism of affiliation and entanglement, way beyond sporty values.

In Naples, the euphoria over the championship also reaches directly into the dark chambers of the soul, where feelings such as contempt and revenge rumble. The championship was won by a well-organized and trained sporting team. The city didn’t win it. Its population did not win and might remain prey to its own inabilities and hubris. On the other hand, the south – mocked and despised as poor, criminal and idle – could officially identify as a functioning winner with further potential. The adult resilience of its inhabitants, lively creative dialogs and process in a hard-earned southern luck probably shapes a positive, connected culture.

Observing Naples on June 23 felt like a semi-futuristic perspective: the awareness and identification in precarious and struggling structures shape a new normal – a fragile, intricate community with experiences of classifications and solidarity.
