We invite you to celebrate the grand opening of this year’s festival at our Festival Center FRAME on Refshaleøen and celebrate the beginning of our 12th festival 2 June from 5 to 8 pm. With a host of exhibitions expanding our knowledge on photography as the main attraction, we hope you want to join us for an evening brimming with great photography, people, talks, music and drinks in the afternoon sun!
Meet the international solo artists
The Grand Opening is a chance for you to meet our three solo artists, Hien Hoang, Alexandra Rose Howland and Krista Svalbonas. Also the Ukrainian artist Olena Morozova presenting her project 'Granny' will visit the opening as well as many of our partners from the Festival Partner Venues and the many creative, dedicated people from the Danish and international photo scene.
Explore the exhibitions
At the opening we invite you to explore the nine exhibitions presented at the Festival Center. This year we will host two exhibitions presented by Odesa Photo Festival as well as exhibitions by our three open call winners. But we also host the exhibition Inside-Out curated by TOFU collective, the group exhibition A Female Gaze curated by Norwegian artist Charlotte Wiig, selected works by three talents from DMJX school of photography and of course our five Futures Nordic Talents Oscar Scott Carl, Inuuteq Stork, Tine Bek, Iben Gad og Luna Scales.
Beer from Schwesterbrau and Music by DJ Shymon
The micro brewery Schwesterbrau established by two engaged sisters from Aarhus will provide cold beer for the opening and DJ SHYMON will set the musical tone from 5-8 pm.

From 100 Year Old Negatives to NFTs
Do you know what an NFT is? Do you know what use it has or how to purchase one? Many of us have no clue about NFTs, the potential of this new blockchain technology or even its use and influence on the art world. But on NFT Friday 10 June you can get wiser on all of this when we invite you to join us for an afternoon about NFT technology and photography. Together with EyeEye.me we investigate its potentials, possibilities and the many new perspectives NFT’s have in relation to art, archives and photography.

Friday 10 May Copenhagen Photo Festival invites everyone with an interest in photography, art or archives to join us at the Festival Center for NFT Friday, a talk and workshop on NFT technology with the three guys behind the Danish online NFT gallery EyeEye.me. The eyeopening afternoon begins with a talk and ends with a workshop about art and NFTs.
The Blossom Expedition
The Copenhagen based online gallery will talk about their own story and how art and technology can benefit from each other. They use the NFT-technology to turn old negatives from The Blosson Expedition, an Atlantic expedition, into digital art on the blockchain.
When the three-masted schooner Blossom traveled the Atlantic Ocean in the 1920s, exploring exotic locations in Africa and South America, its crew members could hardly have imagined that the photographic records of their expedition would become the focal point of an art project almost 100 years later.
From 100 year old negatives to NFTs
Had anyone tried to explain to them what the project entailed, they would have dismissed it as pure science fiction. Indeed, the technological gap between the fragile, faded negatives that still exist as memories of ‘the Blossom Expedition’ and today’s digital space is almost unimaginable. Nevertheless, it has been bridged by three Danes who decided to join forces and introduce a way of making art that is quite unusual in Denmark.
Unique digital art objects
The idea of making digital art out of the negatives was born. Marc Fluri, Sebastian Tiku Lybecker and the third project member, Jesper Munk, decided to conduct an experiment – they would transform some of the photographs from the expedition into NFTs, turning something that was never thought of as artistic into unique digital art objects.
After the talk, Eye Eye’s own crypto currency expert, Jesper Munk, will give an introduction to how you can purchase NFT’s yourself.

Photo Book Market on Refshaleøen
Do you love getting your hands on a beautiful photo book? Immersing yourself in a unique photographic narrative? Or when the experience of photography, book craftsmanship and aesthetics just comes together in a unique way? Then join us at Copenhagen Photo Festival's photo book market on 11 June between 11 am-4 pm at the Festival Center on Refshaleøen.
Within photography, there is a long tradition of not only showing photographs mounted in glass and frame, but also in book form. Here the photographic narratives get a special tactile narrativity - as if the narratives live right there in your hands.
Calling all photo enthusiasts and book aficionados
At this year's festival, we are therefore particularly pleased that we can open the doors to the photo book market on 11 June from 11-16. Here, photo enthusiasts, book aficionados and everyone with a curious heart can experience and buy photo books from some of the most passionate photo book publishers on the Danish photo scene. There will be ample opportunity to meet and talk with the publishers and shops that both sell and publish photo books, and who have a unique knowledge of the photo book tradition and this particular form of expression.
Independent publishers
The participating photo books publishers have a commitment to photo books in common. The publications represent independent photographic works. The coherence of the image series helps to tell the stories and narratives that give the observer the opportunity to immerse themselves in the photograph.

Sammenhængen i billedserierne er med til at fortælle de historier og narrativer, der giver iagttageren mulighed for at fordybe sig i fotografiet.

At this year's festival you can explore several old photographic techniques, when we host workshops in both cyanotyping, polaroid transfer and the ancient Japanese technique stab binding, which makes you able to create your own personal photo or note book.

CPF and Odesa Photo Days Join Hands in Copenhagen This Summer
When Copenhagen Photo Festival celebrates photography in Copenhagen on 2-12 June, you can this year experience two exhibitions from the Ukrainian festival Odesa Photo Days. One by photo artist Olena Morozova, the other by a number of artists who in one night had to adjust to becoming war photographers. Copenhagen Photo Festival are pleased to announce the collaboration with the Ukrainian photo festival, which was canceled when the war broke out in Ukraine.
As a result of the war, everyday life has come to a standstill in Ukraine. This also applies to the cultural life, which usually blooms in the spring and summer months. The international festival of contemporary photography based in Ukraine Odesa Photo Days was to be held on 19-22 May, but as one of the countless cultural events it was canceled when the war broke out. Copenhagen Photo Festival reached out to Odesa Photo Days to collaborate on creating an alternative festival event.
In collaboration, the Nordic region's largest photo festival and Kateryna Radchenko, leader of Odesa Photo Days, have arranged for two exhibitions to be shown in Copenhagen during the festival on 2-12. June. The exhibition Granny by Olena Morozova and the group exhibition The Thin Line, both curated by Kateryna Radchenko. Copenhagen Photo Festival's director, Maja Dyrehauge Gregersen, is looking forward to welcoming the Ukrainian sister festival:
“We are really happy to be able to reach out to Odesa Photo Days and give them an opportunity to realize two exhibitions under our auspices despite the unbearable situation they and the whole of Ukraine are in right now. Our hope is that with this collaboration we can both show some highly current exhibitions and at the same time support Odesa Photo Days and the Ukrainian photographers involved, ”says Maja Dyrehauge Gregersen.
Artists on the front lines as war photographers
The Thin Line is one of the Ukrainian exhibitions to be found at the Copenhagen Photo Festival this summer. The exhibition contains photos of artists who, during one night, had to adjust to becoming war photographers on the front lines.
"In one night, Ukrainian photographers and artists turned into war correspondents documenting the destruction of their hometowns. I shifted the focus of Odesa Photo Days to tell the world what is happening in Ukraine and support photographers working on the front lines." said Kateryna Radchenko, curator of the exhibition and director of Odesa Photo Days. She continues:
"The Thin Line exhibition is special in that it contains both photographs of the current war and earlier series of Ukrainian photographers. For me, this exhibition visually illustrates the state we are in now. When everything has changed, from the daily routine to the level of physical danger, from time to time the subconscious throws up pictures from “previous life”. I am happy for the support from my Danish colleagues and the opportunity to show The Thin Line as well as Granny by Olena Morozova, which is also an incredibly important and relevant exhibition."
In Olena Morozova's exhibition Granny, the artist depicts her grandmother's life and challenge with dementia after a long life as a respected gynecologist and women's advocate in Ukraine.

Copenhagen Photo Festival indgår samarbejde med ukrainsk fotofestival
Når Nordens største fotofestival afholdes den 2.-12. juni 2022, kan man i år som noget helt særligt opleve to udstillinger fra den ukrainske festival Odesa Photo Days. Den ene af fotokunstner Olena Morozova, den anden af en række kunstnere, der på en nat måtte omstille sig til at blive krigsfotografer. Copenhagen Photo Festival har nemlig indgået et samarbejde med den ukrainske fotofestival, der aflyste, da krigen brød ud.
Som følge af krigen er hverdagen gået i stå i Ukraine. Det gælder også for kulturlivet, der normalt blomstrer op i forår- og sommerhalvåret. Den ukrainske fotofestival Odesa Photo Days stod til at blive afholdt den 19.-22. maj, men er en af de utallige kulturbegivenheder, der blev aflyst, da krigen brød ud. Derfor rakte Copenhagen Photo Festival ud til Odesa Photo Days og tilbød dem en platform for kunsten.
I samarbejde har Nordens største fotofestival og Kateryna Radchenko, leder af Odesa Photo Days, arrangeret, at to udstillinger vises i København under festivalen den 2.-12. juni. Udstillingen Granny af Olena Morozova og gruppeudstillingen The Thin Line, der begge er kurateret af Kateryna Radchenko. Copenhagen Photo Festivals direktør, Maja Dyrehauge Gregersen, glæder sig til at byde velkommen til den ukrainske søsterfestival:
”Vi er rigtig glade for at kunne række hånden ud til Odesa Photo Days og give dem en mulighed for at realisere to udstillinger i vores regi på trods af den ubærlige situation de og hele Ukraine står i lige nu. Vores håb er, at vi med dette samarbejde både kan vise nogle højaktuelle udstillinger og samtidig støtte op om Odesa Photo Days og de ukrainske fotografer,” fortæller Maja Dyrehauge Gregersen.
Kunstnere på frontlinjen som krigsfotografer
The Thin Line er den ene af de ukrainske udstillinger, der er at finde på Copenhagen Photo Festival til sommer. Udstillingen indeholder fotos af kunstnere, der i løbet af en nat skulle omstille sig til at blive krigsfotografer på frontlinjen.
”På en nat forvandledes livet for flere af de ukrainske fotografer og kunstnere, der skulle have udstillet på festivalen. I stedet står de nu på frontlinjen som krigsfotografer. Det er vigtigt for mig at støtte op om dem og deres arbejde, og derfor skiftede jeg fokus for Odesa Photo Days,” Kateryna Radchenko, kurator af udstillingen og leder af Odesa Photo Days. Hun fortsætter:
”The Thin Line indeholder fotografier fra krigen og tidligere værker af fotograferne. Den viser, hvilken tilstand vi står midt i. Alt det, der har ændret sig og den virkelighed, vi lever i. Udstillingen er helt særlig, og jeg er glad for støtten fra mine danske kollegaer og muligheden for at vise The Thin Line såvel som Granny af Olena Morozova, der også er en utroligt vigtig og relevant udstilling.”
I Olena Morozovas udstilling Granny skildrer kunstneren sin bedstemors liv og udfordring med demens efter et langt liv som respekteret gynækolog og kvindesagsforkæmper i Ukraine.

THREAD THE NEEDLE is a 2-hour workshop where you learn to sew your own book. We work with the simple, but beautiful Japanese stab binding and the functional and easy singer-stitch.
As a participant, you learn about materials and tools that are used to sew books. All participants go home with handmade notebooks, as well as knowledge and understanding of what it means to sew their own book. The techniques taught can be used to create your own journals, notebooks, zines, artist books and / or photo book dummies.
Perfect for beginners. Price per person is 350 kr. All material is included.
Max. 8 participants, registration by e-mail to hello@blanktpapir.com on a first come, first serve-basis. Your place is only reserved upon payment. In case of participant cancellation later than 48 hours before the workshop, there is no refund.

Female art photographers take center stage
On June 2.-12. 2022, Copenhagen Photo Festival, which is the largest photo festival in the Nordic region,
opens up for reflection and play with the boundaries of photography in collaboration with galleries,
museums and cultural actors in Copenhagen and Scania. The festival center is located at the artificial island
Refshaleøen in Copenhagen, where three international female art photographers are among the highlights.
With humor, diversity, and artistic finesse, they portray new aspects of common narratives of the media,
society and history through the art of photography.
On 2-12 June Copenhagen Photo Festival will for the 12th time open all over Copenhagen with three
international women's lens-based art in focus. Hien Hoang, Alexandra Rose Howland and Krista Svalbonas
won the Copenhagen Photo Festival's open call, and will exhibit at the festival center on Refshaleøen. Each
of the artists blurs the boundaries between documentation and art, leaving a personal and highly topical
impression.
Stereotypes, conflict zones and a highly topical depiction of escape
Vietnamese Hien Hoang won in the category Framing Identity with the project ‘Asia Bistro - Made in Rice’. In
her works, she confronts us with classic notions of Asian culture. In the Framing Society category, the
Anglo-American artist Alexandra Rose Howland won for the project ‘Leave and Let Us Go’. Through collages
of everyday images collected from the inhabitants of Mosul, she strives to unfold a more nuanced and
diverse image of the war-torn region, which is often only known through the media coverage.
American-Latvian-Lithuanian Krista Svalbonas won in the category Framing Vision, which honors an
aesthetic visionary project. With ‘Displacement’, she explores the history of her parents and grandparents.
After Russia's invasion of the Baltic countries in the 1940s, they were driven into exile and housed in camps
for displaced people in Germany. The project illustrates the unfortunate story of displaced people for whom the idea of "home" is undermined by political agendas beyond their control. The war in Ukraine puts her
historically investigative works in a frighteningly contemporary perspective.
The festival gathers Danish photography and puts a long-term focus on talents
In addition to the three solo exhibitions, this year’s festival highlights emerging talents and leading Danish
photographers. According to Managing director Maja Dyrehauge Gregersen, it is important that the festival
shows the audience the quality and diversity that the Danish photo scene has to offer.
“Copenhagen Photo Festival is the natural gathering place for leading actors within Danish photography. I
am particularly proud that this year’s festival presents many internationally oriented and entrepreneurial
actors from the Danish photo and art scene. Amongst other, there will be exhibitions, a market for photo
books, and activities from the Photojournalist education at DMJX, TOFU Collective, Fotogodsbanen from
Århus, PhotoScope from Hillerød, Blankt Papir Press and many more”, says Maja Dyrehauge Gregersen.
Another central part of the festival's work is to lift the Danish talent pool. At the festival, you can therefore
once again experience Futures Nordic Talents, which presents the five photographers Iben Gad, Inuuteq
Storch, Luna Scales, Oscar Scott Carl and Tine Bek. The Futures Nordic Talents initiative is a talent program
that helps accentuate emerging Danish photographers. It is supported by the EU's cultural support program
Creative Europe and runs until 2024.
Activities for photo enthusiasts throughout Copenhagen
At the festival site at Refshaleøen, you can look forward to a sharp program of workshops, talks, music and
guided tours, which will be held throughout the festival period. Here you can learn more about
photography, play with the media's tools or just enjoy the festival atmosphere. There is also ample
opportunity to experience the photographic media unfold throughout many of the art galleries, museums,
and cultural institutions across Greater Copenhagen, for example at Fotografisk Center, Martin Asbæk
Gallery, Alice Folker Gallery, NW Gallery, Banja Rathnov Gallery and Clausens Kunsthandel, together with
Det Grønlandske Hus, Landskrona Foto og Galleri Format in Malmö amongst others. Copenhagen Photo
