Screening + Talk // What Remains: The Life and Work of Sally Mann

6 June @ 19:15

Screening + Talk // 19:15

Cinemateket and the podcast Fotoklubben zoom in on American art photographer Sally Mann (b. 1951).

Sally Mann has been dubbed “America’s greatest photographer” by Time Magazine. Short and sweet. Throughout her career, the now 71-year-old virtuoso has created images that challenge the viewer’s values and moral attitudes.

Her breakthrough on the world stage was heralded with the series ‘Immediate Family’ (1992); controversial, poetic and enigmatic photographs of her own children. Later, in 2003, came the work ‘What Remains’, a landmark reflection on the nature of transience, Mann’s personal feelings towards death and at the same time an examination of the possibilities and limits of photography. All photos were taken on the family farm in Virginia – and the entire process is immortalized by documentarist Steven Cantor who followed Mann for five years. In the process, Cantor gained exclusive access to her life and working methods.

Talk (in Danish):

Fotoklubben hosts Christian Klintholm and Kim William Catton speak about their fascination with Mann, her motifs and techniques before our screening the portrait film ‘What Remains: The Life and Work of Sally Mann’. The hosts are joined by Danish director and photographer Ditte Haarløv Johnsen who is also captivated by Mann’s work. The conversation is in Danish and lasts approx. 45 min.

Fotoklubben is a podcast dedicated to photography. In each episode, photographers Christian Klintholm and Kim William Catton focus on a selected subject and invite a guest into the studio – this time on stage! The atmosphere is relaxed, and knowledge and questions are exchanged with a twinkle in the eye. Read more at fotoklubben.dk.
