Spanish Summer: Artist talk with Gerry Johansson

7. June @ 19:00 - 20:30

Dansk nedenunder

Please join us for an evening with Gerry Johansson, one of Sweden’s most renowned photographers and well known for choosing the book as a preferred format for his work. Gerry Johansson will introduce his new book Spanish Summer, released earlier this spring by photo book publisher MACK. In conversation with Gerry Johansson we will get an insight into his practice and his work, finishing with Q&A and book signing.

Gerry Johansson has published more than 40 books with motifs from many parts of the world, but the work shares the same approach and feel. Johansson seeks out places on the periphery of the cultural landscape with seemingly deserted buildings, places and landscapes, but with lots of traces of people and the cultural signs are found in the details. Gerry Johansson’s works exude silence, timelessness and an exceptional ability to transform a place and a presence into an image that is both precise and transcendent at the same time.

In his new book, Spanish Summer, Gerry Johannson returns to one of the first places that captured his imagination: the plains of central Spain. A chapel remained etched into Johansson’s memory and, decades later, led him to return and rediscover the country’s architectural heritage, religious significance, and beauty. With these images, a survey is conducted of a landscape into which thousands of years of cultural traces have bedded down.

The event is hosted by Fragment and Banja Rathnov Galleri & Kunsthandel in collaboration with the publisher MACK and Copenhagen Photo Festival.
