Friendly Talk: Nick Waplington & David Risley

4. June @ 18:00 - 19:00

Nick Waplington and David Risley have been knowing each other for 25 years… We have the pleasure to welcome them at the Copenhagen Photo Festival 2021. The talk will take the shape of an informal chat between friends.

Nick Waplington is a British artist, photographer and publisher based between London and New York.

In the 1980s, when only 21 years old, he gained broad acclaim for Living Room, a publication portraying families residing in the same housing estate as his grandfather in the Midlands, England. For the last four decades he has been a key influencer, shaping the development of contemporary photography.

Riddled with grit, but also humour, notoriously sharp, yet sensitive, his photographs capture an energetic and colourful worldfrom his own family and friends, London’s post punks, skateboarders, families on the West Bank, New York subway travellers, to glorious stereotypes and those on the fringes of society. Much of his work navigates in the thick of things; portraying the wild aspirations of youth, clashes with the police, music festival revellers, and Black Lives Matters protesters.

His latest publication ANAGLYPTA is a selection of 512 previously unpublished works created between 1980 and 2020. Seven images from the book are exhibited here on a grand scale at FRAMES on FRAME. The book is being distributed as part of the artist’s own poster performance, or action—by wallpapering the images in the public sphere across Copenhagen in early June.

Waplington last exhibited in Denmark at Billed Huset, in Copenhagen in 1995, after which a work from the series Living Room was acquired for the collections at the Royal Library, Denmark.

David Risley makes paintings, writes a bit, curates when he’s allowed, co-owns Chart art fair, teaches sometimes, ran a gallery for 20 years and did some other stuff too.

David used to carry David Risley Gallery for 18 years in the East End of London and moved to Copenhagen 9 years ago.  He now dedicates his time to Funkisfabriken, the huge old factory building he has in Sweden. Funkisbabriken is an audacious project to realign art, food, business and innovation with sustainability. Funkisfabriken will include a zero waste restaurant, exhibition spaces and sculpture gardens by the lake. Where researchers, designers, artists, chefs and other innovators come together to share ideas in a beautiful environment in the Swedish forest with great food.
Museums in London and Copenhagen invited him to curate exhibitions and write catalogue texts for them.
