Cyanotype Workshop at FRAME X Fotogodsbanen

13. June 2021 @ 13:00 - 16:00

Would you like to try this beautiful alternative photography technique?

Cyanotype is an ancient photographic technique invented by Sir John Herschel in 1842, based on a light-sensitive emulsion that reacts to ultraviolet light, for example sunlight. Within the first year of this discovery, Anna Atkins, believed to be the first woman to produce a photograph, applied the process to stock, ferns, seaweed and other plant life and published the first book ever illustrated entirely with photographs.

Leaves, paper cuttings, negatives, etc. are placed directly on paper coated with a light-sensitive emulsion and allowed sunlight to expose the paper, creating a silhouette effect. Engineers used the process well into the 20th century as a simple and inexpensive process to produce copies of drawings, called blueprints. Today, the technique is mainly used by artists.

The process is unique in the way that it is a form of photography that does not require a camera or an expensive darkroom. Watch and experience a photographic technique where UV light is your partner, exposing images in the open using the sun and developing them with water. The possibilities for the most beautiful blueprints are endless.

In this 3 hour course you will be introduced to all steps of the technique and have the opportunity to try it out with simple tools.

You are welcome to bring pressed flowers, negatives (min. 6×6 cm), negatives printed on transparencies, lace, etc., but several different materials will be available on the day of the course.

Please wear practical clothes and bring a good mood!
