How does hate xenophobia look? What drives a person to scratch a swastika into the forehead of someone else and throw him into a well? And why do we need to see him?
White Rage is a highly current and controversial project by the award winning Norwegian photographer and photo-editor Espen Rasmussen (b. 1976). It is a geographically far-reaching and comprehensive visual exploration of xenophobia and the individual mechanisms and motives, which make people turn hate into actions, post-refugee crisis.
With the series, Espen Rasmussen shows us human beings who we rarely see in the media. Humans who increasingly are gaining more power from the US to Hungary – Norway to Ukraine:
“It is important to hear the voices that we don’t normally get to hear – of course through critical questioning. It is important to let them come up to the surface, instead of letting it grow in the dark.” – Espen Rasmussen, Medier24 om projektet.
Espen Rasmussen thus questions freedom of speech – why does he want us to see this side of human beings? And why right now?
“The photographs of Espen Rasmussen incapsulates the complexity of hate – a complexity which is hard to communicate through words alone. We get to peek into an individuals situation and we get to see what despair and poverty really looks like, across country borders. Hereby, we also have new images in our minds for the next time we hear about xenophobia in the news – an expanded understanding, as one might say. That’s why White Rage is a great example of photojournalism at its best”, says festival director Maja Dyrehauge Gregersen about the choice of Espen Rasmussen’s series.
Espen Rasmussen has won several awards for his work, e.g. three prizes at the World Press Photo, prizes in connection to Picture of the Year international (POYi), and he has received awards in relation to Årets bilde (Picture of the Year) in Norway 44 times.
The exhibition is funded by Politiken-Fonden, Aage og Johanne Louis-Hansens Fond, Knud Højgaards Fond and Københavns Kommune.
