Christian Vium – behind the scenes
Christian Vium in dialogue with locals in Umariacu, a settlement outside Tabatinga on the Solimões River. The video is a part of his fieldwork to his research project ‘Temporal Dialogues’ which explores the western representations of the cultural ‘other’ across time and cultures in Australia, Brazil and Siberia. Vium has researched in archive photographs taken by western explorers from 1860-1920, and he has sought out native descendants of the portrayed and in a way re-created the photographs focusing on the portrait, the monument and the landscape. In this video Vium meets a local who tells his story and feelings about the pictures, the past and the portrayed people. Vium goes behind the scenes and shows how he cooperates with locals for capturing an authentic and unique atmosphere.
