Behind The Year, Copenhagen 2018
6. June 2019 - 17. June 2019
Året, København 2018 (The Year, Copenhagen 2018) is a monthly photobook publication featuring contemporary works by Copenhagen-based photographers engaged in portraying the city of Copenhagen during 2018. The chosen photographers spent the 20 first days of the month photographing the city; consequently a photobook was put together featuring the results. Presenting different artists every month, Året gathered throughout 2018 a growing and diverse collection of perspectives and practices.
While Copenhagen has been named the most liveable city in the world several times, and we have seen many beautiful vistas of the Danish capital, the reality is always far more complex. This diary representing varied and personal points of view offers readers an uncensored and unfiltered portrait of the city: “This is our Copenhagen”
While the book project The Year, Copenhagen 2018 is a collective portrait of Copenhagen; the installation Behind The Year is a tribute to the city, which is made especially to celebrate Copenhagen and Copenhagen Photo Festival’s 10th anniversary.
The installation consists of 80 books – one Året/The Year-book for each of the photographers, who participated in portraying Copenhagen during the 12 months the project lasted. In all, the 80 books form a floating, colourful book installation, and we encourage you to take the books down from their placement to flip through and enjoy. When removing a book a quote from a participating photographer will be revealed. The quotes take you behind the scenes and describe process, experiences and thoughts behind the works created for The Year. Are you curious to see how Refshaleøen looked through the eyes of Søren Lilholt in February 2018 or in July as seen from Åsa Mossberg’s point of view, then have a look in the index, where all the pictures from The Year are categorized by Copenhagen’s multitude of neighbourhoods. You’ll be amazed at the diversity of our city!
